Object: In order for all of the students à Sir Winston Churchill to participate fully in school activities, we have implemented a fundraiser offering the possibility of reducing, if not eliminating entirely, countless activity fees. The intention is to provide students and their parents with an advantageous alternative at no cost to them.
Who: Various school clubs, committees and school teams are credited 4% for the resale of each grocery card purchased in the name of their club, committee or school team. The purchased grocery cards can be redeemed at any of the following Loblaws branch stores in Ontario. In the St. Catharines region, capitalizing on the fundraiser is possible when groceries are purchased at Zehrs, No Frills or the Great Canadian Superstore. When driving through Grimsby, in addition to purchasing food at these store locations, it is also possible to fill up your vehicle at the Superstore gas bar.
What: Those wishing to support extra and co-curricular activities can purchase their grocery cards in denominations of $25, $50, $100 or $250 at Sir Winston Churchill Secondary School on Mondays and Wednesday between 2:45-4:00 pm in the main office. The cards are used exactly like debit and gift cards. That is, if there is an unspent balance left on the card, it remains on the card for future use.
When: The intention is to maintain this grocery card fundraiser as a permanent source of funding that would be in place for subsequent academic school years as long as it continues to be supported by parents wishing to alleviate some of the expenditures associated with educational outings, tournaments and other co-curricular programs.
Why: This fundraiser has no cost to students, parents, school, board or any other community supporter and helps to enhance co-curricular program offerings.
How: Four percent of the initial purchase price of the cards is returned to the school by Loblaw. The objective of each participating student is to sollicit the support of his or her family (and /or relatives and acquaintaces) and ask them to purchase grocery cards on a weekly basis and credit them to a club or group that the given student takes part in. The proceeds are then allocated to the identified group to compensate for school trips or educational outings or expenses pertaining to certain sports or other activities.
How it Works: Parents come to Sir Winston Churchill’s main office to purchase their grocery cards on a weekly basis on Mondays and Wednesdays between 2:45-4:00pm using cash or by making a cheque payable to « Sir Winston Churchill ». Upon purchasing a card, parents determine which group or club will be credited with the proceeds raised.
The profits are attributed pro rata according to the proportion of cards credited to each participating group or club. One percent of the profit is used in order to assist students who would otherwise be unable to take part in certain educational, sporting and other activities. On occasion, this percentage that is held back is spent when a majority of the student population takes part in an activity. The proceeds raised through parents purchasing cards without crediting a specific student or those parents who participate after their children have graduated contribute directly to the school rather than to a particular club if so desired. As this fundraising incentive becomes consistent for parents who participate, the objective is to eventually credit as many clubs as SWC has in order to raise funds to minimize costs associated with activities requiring a registration or participation fee.
The intention is that this will become a board, school and community initiative in order for all students to benefit from this endeavour.
We hope that this new initiative will grow exponentially in order to encourage all students to take part in extra and co-curricular activities.
