HISTORY DEPARTMENT
SIR WINSTON CHURCHILL
ATTENDANCE AND EVALUATION POLICY

1.         Students are expected to attend all scheduled classes.  A class mark which is based on such factors as participation and work habits will constitute part of any report mark.  Students who habitually miss class will suffer in the evaluation process because their participation and achievement cannot be fully assessed.

2.         Students are expected to come to every class fully prepared with all assigned work completed.  This includes being present and prepared for presentations, seminars etc. on the assigned date.  Non attendance at these times may result in a mark of zero.

3.         With the exception of special circumstances, students who miss any test because of truancy or a class skip, will receive a mark of zero.  Students who have missed a major test will be required to write the test in order that an evaluation can be made of their progress.  On returning to school, students are to make arrangements as soon as possible to write the missed test or to do an equivalent alternative.  The test or alternative should be written outside of class time so as not to compound missed class time.  A mark of zero will be given if arrangements are not made.

4.         Major assignments such as essays which are handed in after the due date will be penalized 5% per day for a maximum of 5 days.  If the the assignment is not handed in during that time, a mark of zero will be given. Minor assignments and homework will be assessed a penalty of 10% per day. If the  assignment is not handed in during that time, a mark of zero will be given.  Computer related problems (ate my disk, hard drive crashed, printer exploded etc.) are time management issues and the possibility of these events need to be part of your planning.

5.         Should a student not attend a rescheduled test, seminar etc. a mark of zero will be given.

6.         A percentage of marks will be awarded for spelling, grammar and style on all written assignments.  The percentage will be noted on the marking criteria for each assignment where this applies.
