CHC 2D1        Culminating Activity: Immigration Journal 1896 – 1914

Task: You are to write a journal from the perspective of an immigrant to Canada. The “author” of your journal will be someone you create from a country of your choice, however, his/her experiences will be based on historical research which you will conduct.

Procedure:      1. Firstly, decide on who your immigrant will be. For e.g.., will it be a man or a woman? From what country is he/she emigrating? To what specific destination in Canada is he/she traveling?

                        2. Begin researching this period of immigration in Canada. I will provide you with some class time and resources to get you started (use your time wisely!), but you are expected to complete the rest of the work on your own.

                        3. You must have five separate journal entries on the topics listed below. Also, each entry must have a visual of some sort (illustration, photo, etc.)

Length: Each journal entry should be approximately 250 words. A correctly formatted works cited page must be completed and submitted.

Style: For the sake of this assignment, assume your immigrant wrote/spoke using proper English. It is a journal, so the style should be informal, personal. You may handwrite it (NEATLY!) for authenticity’s sake. Because it is someone’s journal, be creative! Make it represent the person who is writing it!

Evaluation: attached rubric (“Writing in Role”)
