UNDERSTANDING CANADIAN LAW
CLU3M
Instructor: Mrs. J. Gemella

Course Description

This course explores legal issues that directly affect students’ lives. To develop an appreciation of the Canadian legal system, students examine the historical roots of Canadian law and expand on their understanding of the role of government in making laws. Students also become familiar with the rights and freedoms that all Canadians enjoy as a result of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Students acquire a practical knowledge of Canada’s legal system, both criminal and civil, and learn how to analyze legal issues. They are given opportunities to develop informed opinions on legal issues and to defend those opinions and communicate legal knowledge in a variety of ways and settings, including legal research projects, and mock trials and debates.

Course Policies and Guide lines:

            Absence:
When you are absent for a class or a number of classes, upon your return it is your responsibility to:

  1. Retrieve any handouts from the course file folder. (Handouts will be organized by date for a two week period).

  1. Borrow and copy any missed notes from another student in the class.

The school Truancy and Late Policies will also apply when appropriate.

Assignments and Projects:

  1. All assignments are due by the beginning of class on the assigned day. Minor assignments will carry a late penalty of 5% per school day. Major assignments will be penalized 10% per school day.

  1. Late assignments/projects will not be accepted once I have graded and handed back that particular assignment to other students in the class. An automatic zero will result. Exceptions will be made for students with unique circumstances on a case-by-case basis (e.g. illness for an extended period).
  1. All work must be neat and accurate, typing or word processing of major assignments is strongly encouraged.

  1. All borrowed information must be properly documented using an expected procedure, i.e. footnoting, end noting, etc. Plagiarism is an offence and will result in an automatic grade of zero for the assignment.

Tests:

  1. All students are expected to write tests on the set date. If a student must miss a test day, then the onus is placed on the student to let me know well in advance (at least one full day in advance of the test date), and to arrange for an alternate time to take the test.

  1. If the student misses a test day without letting me know in advance, then only under extenuating circumstances and with a parent/guardian note, will the student be permitted to make up the test.
  1. If the student misses a test without a verified absence, an automatic zero will be awarded for the test mark.

  1. If the student is found to have cheated on a test or is talking to other students during the test, an automatic zero will be awarded for the test mark.
