AMI1O1 - Band

This course is destined for students who don’t have previous musical experience. It emphasizes the performance of instrumental music at a beginner’s level that strikes a balance between challenge and skill.  The objective is to develop technique, sensitivity, and imagination. Students will participate in creative activities that teach them to listen with understanding while developing their musical literacy skills. They will develop an understanding of the conventions and elements of music through performance, music history and theory, while developing skills that are transferable to other areas of life.

AMI2O1 - Band

This course emphasizes performance of music at an intermediate level and it strikes a balance between challenge and ability. The objective is to further develop skills acquired previously. Creative and critical analysis processes in composition and performance will be incorporated as students work towards improved musical literacy skills. Students will develop their understanding of musical conventions, practices, and terminology and will apply these elements of music in a range of activities. They will also explore the function of music in society with reference to the self, communities, and cultures. Students will continue to develop their understanding of the language of music, including the elements, terminology and history. They will increase their range, further develop their technical skills and enhance their interpretation of music through stylistic devices explored throughout the course.

Course note: This course is for students with prior experience either through the completion of AMI1O in grade 9, equivalent private musical instruction, or previous enrollment in the DSBN Elementary Music Program.  Please consider a further opportunity to build upon your musical skills by also adding the credited credited after school AMR2O1 music repertoire course to your selection.

AMI3M1 - Band                                                                                                                                                                        

This course provides students with opportunities to develop their musical literacy through the creation, appreciation, analysis and performance of music, including traditional, commercial and art music.  Students will apply the creative process when performing appropriate technical exercises and repertoire and will employ the critical analysis processes when reflecting on, responding to, and analysing live and recorded performances.  Students will consider the function of music in society and the impact of music on individuals and communities.  They will explore how to apply skills developed in music to their life and careers while continuing to develop their understanding of the elements of music through the study of baroque and classical music.  Students will further develop their sight-reading and technical skills as well as continue to use critical thinking skills to enhance their interpretation of music through stylistic devices explored throughout the course.

AMI4M1 - Band

This course enables students to enhance their musical literacy through the creation, appreciation, analysis, and performance of music.  Students will perform traditional, commercial, and art music, and will respond with insight to live and recorded performances.  Students will enhance their understanding of the function of music in society and the impact of music on themselves and various communities and cultures.  Students will analyse how to apply skills developed in music to their life and careers while continuing to develop their understanding of the elements of music through the study of music from the Romantic period and from the Twentieth Century.  Students will perfect their technical skills, further develop their performance skills by incorporating stylistic devices upon sight-reading new repertoire to enhance their interpretation of new pieces.
