AMS1O1 (Grade 9 - Open Course)

This course emphasizes the performance of a string instrument at a beginner’s level that strikes a balance between challenge and skill.  Students will have the opportunity to learn to play the violin, viola, cello or acoustic stand-up bass.  The course is aimed at developing technique, sensitivity, and imagination. Students will participate in creative activities that teach them to listen with understanding. They will also learn correct musical terminology and its appropriate use as well as have the opportunity to develop good tone quality, projection and intonation.  The course focuses on reading, performing and appreciating music as well as the study of music theory, history and analysis.

Course note: No prior musical experience is required to take this course.

AMS2O1 (Grade 10 - Open Course)

This course emphasizes performance of the violin, viola, cello or acoustic bass at an intermediate level that strikes a balance between challenge and skill. Student learning will include participating in creative activities and listening perceptively. Students will begin to arrange their own music, as well as create and analyze music through composition, performance, and a range of reflective and analytical activities.  Students will develop their understanding of musical conventions, practices, and terminology.  They will also explore the function of music in society with reference to the self, communities and cultures.  Students will continue to develop their understanding of the language of music, including the elements, terminology and history.  They will increase their range, further develop their technical skills and enhance their interpretation of music through stylistic devices explored throughout the course.

Course note: This course is for students with prior violin, viola, cello or stand-up acoustic bass experience either through the completion of AMS1O in grade 9, equivalent private musical instruction, or previous enrollment in the Niagara Youth Orchestra.

AMS3M1 (Grade 11)

This course emphasizes performance of the violin, viola, cello or acoustic bass at an intermediate-advanced level that strikes a balance between challenge and skill. Students will perform technical exercises and appropriate repertoire, complete creative activities and analyse both live and recorded performances. They will continue to develop their understanding of the elements of music, through the study of various music including selections from Baroque and classical music, popular music and non-Western excerpts.  They will continue to increase their understanding of the elements of music, develop their technical and creative abilities as well as use current technology in context.

AMS4M1 (Grade 12)

This course enables students to enhance their musical literacy of stringed instruments through the creation, appreciation, analysis, and performance of music.  Students will perform traditional, commercial, and art music, and will respond with insight to live and recorded performances.  Students will enhance their understanding of the function of music in society and the impact of music on themselves and various communities and cultures.  Students will analyse how to apply skills developed in music to their life and careers while continuing to expand their treatment and application of the elements of music through the study of music from the Romantic period and from the Twentieth Century.  Students will perfect their technical skills, develop further their performance practice by incorporating stylistic devices upon sight-reading new repertoire to enhance their interpretation of new pieces.
